Analog Books for Digital Readers
Thursday August 29, 2024 10:30am - 11:25am PDT
Today's readers are used to consuming (and creating!) information from sources that leverage multiple literacies to convey messages and ideas. In comparison, traditional print books can feel heavy and overwhelming for readers whose eyes are used to scanning through content quickly - bouncing from images to text to video to graphs to charts and back again. This session will focus on authors and books that have embraced the formats today's readers most respond to. Plus, we'll discuss how these multimodal texts can be used to help build fluency, confidence and a positive reading identity.

Measuring the Story: A Third Grade Integrated Arts Lesson for Elementary Teachers
Thursday August 29, 2024 10:30am - 11:25am PDT
Quilting has told the story of our people for centuries. While the style of quilting has changed over the years, what has not changed is the precise need for measuring, a sense of design, and the creative process. Librarians will be in the role of the students, gathering information about quilting and the history of some of its patterns, measuring for information, and adapting those patterns and materials to elaborate on a quilting design of their choosing. **Please bring your computer to this session.**
