Library Camp 2024

Artificial intelligence, the 2024 election, social media–oh my! Support students to develop healthy skepticism without turning into cynics as they gain vital source evaluation and reasoning skills. In this continuously updated interactive workshop for upper elementary through high school librarians and classroom educators, you’ll learn how professional fact checkers avoid falling for misinformation whether it’s generated by humans or AI. You’ll also practice identifying and evaluating credible sources using a variety of methods, and then put what you’ve learned to the test with our favorite game: Share or Beware! You’ll leave with ideas, teaching tips and ready-to-use resources to help students check facts and fight misinformation this election season and beyond.

In this fun, relaxed session, learn about how a 2 month long term substitute job turned into a 14 (and still going!) year long career. Learn from my mistakes, successes and experiences in the ever changing elementary school library. We will start with a little background info then onto examples of lessons and activities...with plenty of time for Q&A and sharing.

In this engaging professional learning session, participants will discover how to use Scratch for storytelling with students in grades 3-8. The session starts with an introduction to Scratch, a visual programming language that enhances creativity and logical thinking. Participants will learn to animate characters, integrate dialogue, and construct storylines, enabling students to retell familiar tales or create new endings. This session equips participants with the skills to guide students in storytelling, enhancing their narrative and computational abilities, and engage in culturally sustaining storytelling.

Come to this session to get tips on things you can do *right away* in addition to a step by step plan on how to find out exactly what you have in your collection so you can take the necessary steps to create a socially just school library.

Quilting has told the story of our people for centuries. While the style of quilting has changed over the years, what has not changed is the precise need for measuring, a sense of design, and the creative process. Librarians will be in the role of the students, gathering information about quilting and the history of some of its patterns, measuring for information, and adapting those patterns and materials to elaborate on a quilting design of their choosing. **Please bring your computer to this session.**
